Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium)

Nexium is used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), such as acid regurgitation, regurgitation of food and liquid, and acid reflux. The drug works by helping the stomach and esophagus to absorb acid and to prevent acid from reaching the small intestine. Nexium is taken by mouth, usually twice a day. Nexium is available in several strengths, but most people take it with food to help relieve symptoms. You may also find it helpful to take it for an extended period of time, so that the acid in your stomach can be absorbed more easily. Nexium is also known as esomeprazole magnesium, and is prescribed to treat conditions that cause frequent acid reflux. The acid in your esophagus can irritate the lining of your esophagus and make it worse. The acid in the lining of your esophagus can irritate the lining of your stomach, making it harder to swallow. The esophagus is also hard and slippery, making it more difficult to break food.
